How Play Therapy works in school
-
I will first ascertain that the school can provide a confidential space that will be avaialble at the same time each week and is appropriate for Play Therapy
-
The therapist will meet with the school to discuss possible referrals and to agree on the days and times that the sessions will take place
-
School staff will then liaise with the parents/carers of the children who are being referred and obtain consent. Following this the therapist will arrange an introductory meeting with parents/carers
-
The therapist will then conduct a background assessment with parents/carers, teaching staff and any other professionals working with the family to gather the relevant information and ascertain the needs of the child
-
Written and signed consent for Play Therapy to start will then be gathered from all parents/carers with parental responsibility. This is essential and the therapy cannot go ahead without their written consent
-
The therapist will then meet the parent/carer and child for an introductory session in the designated playroom
-
Individually chosen toys and materials will be supplied by the therapist
-
Sessions will be weekly and will last between 45-60mins (as agreed prior to starting)
-
Review meetings will be conducted every 6-8 weeks with the parents/carers, school staff and relevant professionals
* The duration of the intervention is dependant on the child's level of need. This will be determind with parents/carers and/or schools staff during the assessment process. The therapist will monitor progress and give feedback every 6-8 weeks during review meetings.
The minimum number of sessions is 6.
